Week 7 PFF Curiosities - BYU vs Baylor

-- Another short one cause it's Disney time

BYU's screen game is losing some effectiveness
I'm not sure if this is an execution issue, the loss of lineman wonder Grimes, or if teams have just caught on to what BYU is running, but the screens are drying up. In the last two losses BYU has attempted seven screen plays.

They've connected on six of them - yay!

Those six have gone for 22 yards - yuck!

BYU has gained 132 yards in the screen game this year. Zach Wilson picked up 318 in 2020.

Baylor doing the opposite of Boise
Last week I wondered if dropping into coverage and allowing Jaren Hall time to throw was a strategy to muck up BYU's passing game. It kind of worked for Boise, but Baylor abandoned that blueprint. They blitzed Jaren on 46% of his passes! And those blitzes worked. Jaren was 9 for 15 (60%) for 79 yards when blitzed. But when not blitzed Jaren was awesome, completing 13 of 16 passes (81%) for 263 yards. I know Baylor has looked great in his limited opportunities, but I think Jaren is awesome. I believe in him as the starter.

Throw up approach
Tossing the ball into the sky and hoping for the best isn't usually a solid option. But the Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney combo are delivering on contested catches. Puka has caught six contested balls (on 10 attempts) which puts him 23rd in the country in that random statistic. Personally I think PFF jobbed him out of a contested catch against USU, which had he been credited for would place him 12th in the country. Meanwhile Romney has caught 4 of the 6 contested balls thrown his way.

Run defense what happened to you
I have nothing clever to say about the run defense. Of the 283 yards that Ebner and Smith ran for, you can try and talk yourself into this idea that a big chunk of that yardage came on four runs where guys just got loose. They gained 124 yards on just four runs! That's crazy. But they also ran for 159 yards on their other 34 attempts. Baylor roasted us whether on the big plays or the middling plays. I wonder how much of the Baylor success was talent versus Grimes scheming up a doozy against a defense he knew exactly how to gouge.

It was a bad time for the worst game of Allgeier's career
Allgeier got 18 touches which is the minimum we need the ball in his hand. Somehow those 18 touches only netted 41 yards (2.3 yards per touch). Prior to the Baylor game Allgeier had career totals of 326 touches and 2,246 yards which equated to an absurd 6.9 yards per touch.

Who's getting dem snaps (TE edition)
Isaac Rex has been on the field for 412 snaps, the third most of anyone on BYU's offense. He's only been targeted 20 times this season. BYU needs to unlock both Rex and the Holkamania.

Locational watching
I watched this game in a little place called Galaxy's Edge while eating a Ronto Wrap and let me just say if you're going to endure a loss there's probably not a better place to do so. Drowning your sorrows on Rise of the Resistance is about as quick a way to turn around a sour mood as possible.
